A common theme I have heard over the past few weeks, is clients wanting to explore new activities and continue to grow themselves. But what I hear next is often some doubt or confusion of “not knowing where to start” or “being afraid of wasting time and possibly not like the new activity/hobby.” I want to share some things I have shared with some of my clients, in the case you are finding yourself on this similar journey. First off, have an open mind. You may find that along the way of trying a new activity, you absolutely hate it, but you may find that you enjoy it. Perhaps you enjoy that something is challenging and you enjoy having to be creative in finding a solution (i.e. working on a car). Perhaps you are looking for something more relaxing and calming (i.e. meditation or yoga). Regardless of what you are going to try out, keep in mind that you are doing this for you and there is no wrong way of doing it. Second, do not aim for perfection. Many of my Type A clients (that includes myself) sometimes try something new, only to get frustrated when it is not done “right” or “doesn’t compare to that professional you are following on Instagram.” Remember do not aim for perfectionism when you are exploring activities. Aim to learn a part of yourself in the activity, even if that means learning something you do not like. Third, keep in mind that you are doing this for you and no one else. It would not be self-growth if you were exploring an activity to please someone else. Just because your sister, brother, dad, mom, or whomever enjoys a certain activity does not mean you must also enjoy it. If it’s different from what other people in your inner circles are used to, then take this as an opportunity to help someone else learn about your interests and, more importantly, about you. Here is a list of activities that you may be interested in exploring:
Of course, these are not all the hobbies that are out there, but just a few to get your mind going. Let me know what you end up trying and I hope you have fun exploring something new about yourself.
